Morgan L. Kaplan is no longer with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Morgan L. Kaplan was a fellow in the American Statecraft Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His research examines U.S. foreign policy, Middle East security politics, alliances and partnerships, and civil wars.

While Kaplan’s research is focused predominantly on the Middle East, his work addresses broader trends in international security, such as the origins and outcomes of third-party intervention, self-determination movements, and transnational politics. His work has been published in Foreign Affairs, the Washington Post, Lawfare, Ethnopolitics, and elsewhere.

Kaplan was previously executive editor of the quarterly journal International Security and series editor of the Belfer Center Studies in International Security book series, both at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. He was also the creator and host of the podcast, IS: Off the Page, which paired academic authors with policy practitioners to discuss contemporary security politics.

Prior to his work at International Security, Kaplan was a postdoctoral fellow at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies at Northwestern University, a postdoctoral research fellow in the International Security Program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and a predoctoral fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University.

Kaplan holds a BA in international affairs from the George Washington University, and an MA and PhD in political science from the University of Chicago. He is also a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
