Washington, DC – The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace announced today that BBC journalist Kim Ghattas will join the Carnegie Endowment as a senior visiting fellow. Based out of both Carnegie’s Washington, DC, office and the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, Ghattas will work on her forthcoming book about the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia and its impact on the wider Middle East.
“We’re honored that Kim Ghattas will succeed Jeffrey Goldberg as our journalist-in-residence,” said Carnegie President William J. Burns. “Kim is one of the most insightful and incisive observers of the Middle East and a longtime and treasured friend of Carnegie. Her work could not be more timely or more important.”

Carnegie’s work there is sharp and grounded in regional realities, always aiming to go beyond accepted wisdom and look at the big picture as the region transforms. Carnegie offers the perfect platform from which to pursue my research and writing” said Ghattas. “I look forward to working closely with Carnegie’s amazing network of scholars in the region and beyond, and I hope to make a contribution to their invaluable efforts as well.”
Born and raised in Beirut, Ghattas has spent much of her nearly two-decade journalistic career covering the Middle East for outlets such as the BBC, Financial Times, and Lebanon’s Daily Star. She was part of an Emmy-Award-winning BBC team covering the Lebanon-Israel conflict of 2006. From 2008, she served as the BBC’s State Department correspondent based in Washington for six years, and then covered the 2016 US presidential campaign. She’s a columnist for Foreign Policy magazine and is the author of a New York Times best-selling book The Secretary: A Journey with Hillary Clinton from Beirut to the Heart of American Power.
