Oz Hassan

Oz Hassan is no longer with the Carnegie Endowment.

Oz Hassan, previously a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, is one of the United Kingdom’s foremost authorities on democracy promotion and democracy assistance programs and a leading scholar on U.S. foreign policy. He has published widely on U.S. policy in the Middle East and North Africa, European foreign policy, transatlantic relations, civil society development, assistance programs, counterterrorism and counterproliferation strategies, and democratization.

Hassan is also an assistant professor in U.S. national security at the University of Warwick’s Center for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization and its Center for Studies in Democratization. He has been awarded multiple highly prestigious research prizes, including the Economic and Social Research Council’s Future Research Leaders Award for his project entitled Transatlantic Interests and Democratic Possibility in a Transforming Middle East, which analyses the conflict of interests between U.S. and EU policies in Egypt, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. 

Hassan is also a coordinator on a project funded by the UK Defense Science and Technology Laboratory that analyzes the relationship between science and security. In addition, he is chair of Europe’s largest U.S. foreign policy working group, which brings academics and policy practitioners together, and has worked on multiple European Commission–funded research projects.

Hassan’s interests focus on U.S. and European foreign policy broadly with a particular emphasis on the Middle East, North Africa, and the Arab Awakening. His latest book, Constructing America’s Freedom Agenda for the Middle East, combined extensive fieldwork in the region with innovations in computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software. He is also particularly interested in research methods involving big data, having taught qualitative methods at multiple high-profile institutions across the globe.
